Why does my carpet have ripples?

Almost always because it wasn't power-stretched at installation. A knee-kicker gets the carpet onto the tack strip but doesn't put real tension across the room, and over a year or so the carpet relaxes and buckles. Humidity swings make it show faster here. It can be fixed by re-stretching, which means pulling it off the strip, tensioning it properly and re-trimming — more expensive than doing it right the first time. Most manufacturer warranties actually require power stretching, so a rippled floor may not be covered.

What carpet holds up best with pets?

Solution-dyed nylon with a moisture-barrier pad. Solution-dyed means the color goes all the way through the fibre rather than being applied to the surface, so it survives cleaning — including the aggressive cleaning pet accidents call for — without fading. Nylon recovers from crushing where polyester mats. And the moisture barrier is the part people skip: without it, accidents soak through the pad into the slab, and once that's happened the smell is in the concrete and no amount of carpet cleaning reaches it.

Hard surface has taken over the main living areas of nearly every house we work in, and that's mostly the right outcome. But carpet hasn't gone away, and in the rooms where it belongs there's nothing that does the same job: it's warm, it's quiet, it's soft to fall on, and per square foot it remains the cheapest floor you can install.

The two things that decide whether a carpet floor is good are the fibre and the stretch. Nylon takes crushing and springs back; polyester feels lovely in the showroom and mats down in a traffic lane within a couple of years. And carpet that was stretched in with a knee-kicker instead of a power stretcher will ripple — not maybe, and usually within eighteen months, at which point it needs re-stretching that costs more than doing it right would have.

Pad matters more than people expect too. A cheap pad will fail under a good carpet and take the carpet with it.

What we supply

Carpet, pad, and tack strip, delivered with the seam layout already planned against the room dimensions before the roll is cut. Seam placement is a design decision — putting one across a doorway or in the middle of the most-viewed sightline is a permanent, avoidable annoyance.

What to ask any bidder

The specifications that decide whether this floor lasts — and the ones that rarely make it onto a quote.

Nylon resists crushing and recovers; PET/polyester is softer and cheaper but mats in traffic lanes. For a hallway or stairs, nylon is worth the difference.
Power stretching is not optional. A knee-kicker install ripples, and the manufacturer's warranty generally requires proper stretching anyway.
Face weight alone is a poor durability signal — density and twist level matter more. A tightly twisted, densely tufted 40oz outperforms a loose 60oz.
Moisture-barrier pad is worth specifying in any house with pets or young children; it stops accidents reaching the slab, which is where the odor problem actually lives.
Pad thickness should match the carpet: most residential cut-pile wants 7/16" to 1/2" at 6–8lb density. Thicker is not better and can void the warranty.
Seams should run parallel to the main light source and away from primary traffic paths and doorways. Plan them before cutting, not during.
