What tile & stone involves in Montgomery
Tile in the historic district is a structural question before it is a finish question. The houses along the old streets near the original townsite are pier-and-beam with original pine subfloor over joists that were sized by an entirely different standard than modern code, and many have had a century of point loads, plumbing cuts, and partial repairs. Tile is rigid. It does not tolerate a floor that flexes underfoot, and the failure is not subtle — you get cracked tiles in a line, or grout that opens along a joist bay.
So the first thing we do in one of these houses is not measure for tile, it is get under the floor and look at deflection. The industry standard for a tile substrate is L/360 for ceramic and L/720 for natural stone, and a fair number of the pier-and-beam floors in this part of Montgomery do not meet either without help. Sistering joists, adding a mid-span beam, or adding a second layer of subfloor are all real options and they all cost money that a tile quote by square foot does not include. We would rather have that conversation before you have bought the tile.
Where the house is on a slab — most of the newer acreage construction west of town — tile is straightforward and the only local wrinkle is that custom slabs poured on unimproved ground often need more flattening than a production-built slab does.
The job we run most here
A historic-district bath or entry where the joist system has to be stiffened before a single tile is set, and the customer has been quoted by someone who never looked underneath.
What it costs in Montgomery
Tile itself runs the standard $10–$20 installed here. Structural subfloor work in a pier-and-beam house is quoted separately once we have been underneath, because it varies from nothing to several thousand dollars and guessing at it helps nobody.

Questions we get in Montgomery
- Can I tile the floor in a historic Montgomery pier-and-beam house?
- Often yes, but only after the floor is stiff enough to hold it. Tile cracks when the surface underneath it moves, and hundred-year-old joist systems frequently flex more than the tile industry's minimum. We get under the house and measure deflection first. If it needs sistered joists or an added subfloor layer, that work comes first and it is real money — but it is far less than replacing a cracked stone floor a year later.
- What is L/360 and why does my installer keep mentioning it?
- It is the deflection limit a floor has to meet to carry tile: over a given span the floor may not flex more than that span divided by 360. Natural stone needs twice as stiff, L/720. It sounds academic and it is the single most common reason tile fails in an older house. If a bidder has not been under your pier-and-beam house, they have not checked it, and they are quoting on hope.
