A plank stair install has to solve several things at once. The nosing has to be a purpose-made piece that matches the plank rather than a strip of the plank itself bent over the edge, because a nosing takes the most wear and the most weight in the house. Riser heights have to stay consistent — building codes allow very little variation between the tallest and shortest riser in a flight, and adding material to treads without accounting for it can put a staircase out of tolerance. And the joint where the tread meets the riser is visible from below at eye level on every trip up the stairs, which is precisely why a rushed job announces itself.

Because these staircases are usually open to the entry, they are also the first thing a visitor sees. It is the least forgiving surface in the house and it is priced accordingly, per tread rather than by square footage.
