What carpet & subfloor prep involves in Spring

The carpet pattern here is consistent enough to be predictable: hard surface downstairs, carpet upstairs and on the stairs. Which means that in Spring, carpet work is mostly stair work and second-floor bedrooms, and the two have different requirements.

On the stairs the fitting method decides everything. A waterfall installation drapes the carpet over the nosing in a continuous sheet — quicker and cheaper. An upholstered or cap-and-band fit wraps each tread and pulls the carpet tight into the crease at the back of every step. Upholstered costs more, looks considerably better on an open staircase visible from the entry, and wears better at the nosing, which is where a stair carpet always fails first. On a closed staircase between two walls, waterfall is perfectly reasonable and the saving is real.

Upstairs, the thing worth knowing about these houses is that the second-floor subfloor is usually three-quarter-inch OSB or plywood over joists at standard spacing, and after twenty-five years it squeaks. Carpet muffles it rather than fixing it, and the only time it is cheap to address is when the old carpet is up and the subfloor is exposed. Screwing down loose subfloor at that point takes an hour or two. Doing it after the new carpet is stretched in means pulling the new carpet back up, so we ask about squeaks before the job rather than after.

Upstairs bedrooms and an upholstered stair fit in a 1990s two-story, with loose second-floor subfloor screwed down while it is exposed.

What it costs in Spring

Carpet and pad runs $3.50–$7 installed. Stairs are per tread, and an upholstered fit costs more than waterfall — worth it on an open staircase, not necessarily on a closed one. Subfloor screw-down while the floor is open is inexpensive and cannot be done cheaply later.

Questions we get in Spring

What is the difference between waterfall and upholstered stairs?
Waterfall drapes the carpet over the nosing as a continuous sheet — faster and cheaper. Upholstered wraps each tread and pulls the carpet tight into the crease at the back of every step, so the shape of the stair reads clearly. Upholstered costs more, looks markedly better on an open staircase, and holds up longer at the nosing where stair carpet always wears first. On a closed staircase between two walls, waterfall is a sensible saving.
Can you fix my squeaky upstairs floor while replacing the carpet?
Yes, and that is by far the cheapest moment to do it. Squeaks in these houses are usually subfloor panels that have worked loose from the joists over twenty-odd years. With the old carpet and pad up, screwing the subfloor back down takes an hour or two. Once new carpet is stretched in, fixing it means pulling that carpet back up — so tell us about the squeaks before we start, not after.
