What carpet & subfloor prep involves in Tomball

Carpet in the older part of Tomball raises a question that does not come up in slab houses at all: what is happening underneath it. In a pier-and-beam home the floor assembly sits over a ventilated crawlspace open to ground moisture, and carpet with a standard pad over that assembly acts as an insulating blanket. Moisture rising through the subfloor reaches the underside of the pad, cannot escape upward through the carpet quickly, and condenses. Over a few years that produces musty odour, and in the worst cases it degrades the subfloor itself.

The fix is not a better carpet. It is a ground vapor barrier in the crawlspace — heavy polyethylene laid over the soil — plus adequate ventilation. That is not flooring work and we will raise it anyway, because installing new carpet over an unaddressed crawlspace in one of these houses is putting good material into a bad environment. It is the same conversation we have about wood floors here, for the same underlying reason.

The second practical issue is tack strip. Fastening into original board subfloor is generally fine where the boards are sound, but around the perimeter of rooms in a hundred-year-old house we routinely find sections that have been cut for plumbing or previous repairs and never properly patched. Those want addressing before the strip goes down, otherwise the carpet releases at exactly the spot where it is most visible and most likely to trip somebody.

The job we run most here

New carpet in a downtown-area pier-and-beam house after confirming the crawlspace has a ground vapor barrier, with perimeter subfloor patched where previous plumbing cuts left nothing for tack strip to hold.

What it costs in Tomball

Carpet and pad runs $3.50–$7 installed. Perimeter subfloor patching in an old house is modest and necessary. The crawlspace vapor barrier is not our scope and it is the thing that actually determines how long the carpet lasts.

Questions we get in Tomball

Why does the carpet in my old house smell musty?
In a pier-and-beam home it is usually moisture coming up from the crawlspace rather than anything spilled on top. Ground moisture rises through the subfloor, meets the underside of the pad, and cannot escape quickly through the carpet — so it stays there. New carpet over the same crawlspace will do the same thing. The fix is a ground vapor barrier over the soil and adequate ventilation underneath, and it needs doing before, not after.
Will tack strip hold in a hundred-year-old subfloor?
Where the boards are sound, yes. What we watch for around the perimeter is old plumbing cuts and previous repairs that were never properly patched — those leave sections with nothing solid for the strip to grip, and the carpet lets go there. It is usually visible once the old flooring is up and it is a small piece of carpentry to fix. Left alone it becomes a loose edge at a doorway, which is a trip hazard rather than just an annoyance.
